American Airlines And Gol Announce Codeshare Agreement

After approval from U.S. and Brazilian authorities, the new American and GOL codeshare allows customers to seamlessly connect to 53 GOL flights via GIG, Sao Paulo (GRU), Brasilia (BSB), Manaus (MAO) and Fortaleza (FOR). Ultimately, a deal with GOL is better than nothing, but it`s hardly a substitute for losing LATAM. GOL is Brazil`s largest airline, although it only operates 737 and doesn`t have true business class, so it won`t be the most attractive option for many high-end passengers. Late last year, it was announced that Delta would invest in LATAM, which led LATAM to sever its relationship with American. Latin America is a market where America has historically been dominant and now needs to rethink its entire strategy. It`s better than nothing, but I hope this codeshare will expand and hopefully GOL will take off to more destinations outside of Brazil. It could be a good partner for Qantas if they fly to Brazil in the coming years as part of their Sunrise project.
